How To Be Better By Being Authentic

In a world that often pushes us to do more, be more, and conform to external expectations, the power of being yourself, focusing on what truly matters, and leveraging your unique strengths cannot be overstated. Embracing authenticity allows us to shed the weight of comparison and live in alignment with our values. By doing less, we create space for clarity, creativity, and intentional action. And when we play to our strengths, we unlock our full potential, directing our energy toward what we’re naturally good at and passionate about. This approach not only leads to greater fulfillment but also helps us build a life that feels genuinely our own.

Women, in particular, are asked to do more, improve, take on more burdens, and do it all flawlessly with no support. No one has ever actually achieved that, but we are told relentlessly that we ought to be able to. You are supposed to be a wife, a mother, a homemaker, a friend, and hold down a full time job while making sure the car oil gets changed and coaching your kiddo’s rec league soccer team.

Be Yourself

You were born with unique strengths, traits, and talents that make you, you. Your gifts are needed in the world to fill a specific niche. You do not need to become an athlete, master a musical instrument, or learn to bake to be a well rounded person. Stop taking courses, picking up hobbies, or joining groups because you think you need to improve yourself. You’ve probably already naturally gravitated towards authenticity. There was never any need to force it.

Several years ago, probably almost a decade now, I discovered the 16 Personalities website and the Meyers-Briggs personalities. It was life changing for me. I was under the impression that there was one specific set of characteristics that made someone “normal” or “female” or “worthwhile”. I had, for decades, been trying to be something I wasn’t. Finally, understanding my personality, that there were millions of million of people like me, and that the way I was made was not a mistake, was freeing in ways it is difficult to describe.

Women don’t all have to be sweet. We don’t have to like cooking. It’s okay to hate to exercise. Being ambitious isn’t a requirement for being a successful person. Who knew? You’re fine, better than fine, the way you already are.

Do Less

In a world that often glorifies busyness and productivity, the idea of removing tasks, commitments, and even habits from our lives can feel counterintuitive. Yet, simplifying our schedules and eliminating unnecessary clutter can lead to greater mental clarity, increased focus, and a deeper sense of fulfillment.

The process begins with intentional reflection. Take a step back and evaluate the aspects of your life that no longer serve you. This might include activities that drain your energy, relationships that feel one-sided, or obligations that you’ve outgrown. By identifying these areas, you can make conscious decisions to let them go.

Removing things from your schedule doesn’t mean doing less for the sake of laziness; rather, it’s about prioritizing what truly matters. When you cut out the noise, you leave room for the things that align with your values and goals. For example, saying no to an extra work project might free up time to invest in your health or spend quality moments with loved ones.

Detoxing your life goes beyond your calendar. It can involve decluttering your physical space, unsubscribing from unnecessary emails, or even stepping away from social media platforms that no longer bring joy or inspiration. These small changes can create a ripple effect, helping you feel lighter and more in control.

Ultimately, the act of removing is empowering. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to fill every moment with action or obligation. True productivity and happiness often come from simplifying, focusing, and embracing the freedom that comes with less. By letting go, you make space for what genuinely enhances your life.

Play to Your Strengths

Playing to your strengths as a woman, especially in a role at home, is about embracing your unique abilities, natural instincts, and personal values to create a balanced and fulfilling environment. Women often possess qualities such as empathy, intuition, multitasking, and emotional intelligence, which can be powerful tools in managing a household and nurturing relationships.

One of the keys to playing to your strengths is understanding what you truly excel at and leaning into those abilities with confidence. For example, if you’re a great communicator, use that skill to foster open and honest conversations with your family. If you’re naturally organized, take charge of planning and structuring the home to bring a sense of order and stability.

It’s also important to prioritize self-awareness and self-care. Recognizing what gives you energy and satisfaction allows you to show up as your best self for your loved ones. Whether it’s cooking meals, creating a welcoming home environment, or being the emotional anchor for your family, these contributions are invaluable.

At the same time, playing to your strengths doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone. Part of being strong is knowing when to delegate, ask for help, or set boundaries. The role you play at home is not about perfection but about authenticity and teamwork. By harnessing your natural abilities and aligning them with your values, you can create a home that thrives on love, resilience, and harmony.
